How to Use a Sprint BlackBerry as a Modem for a Laptop

Using your Sprint BlackBerry as a modem for your laptop is called"tethering." The advantage of tethering is that you can use the Internet on your laptop wherever you get mobile broadband service, even if no traditional wireless network is in the area. As of February 2011, Sprint charges an extra monthly fee for data plans that include tethering. Contact Sprint before using your phone as a modem to make sure your plan includes tethering. Items you will need BlackBerry-compatible USB cable Step 1 Download and install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software for your laptop (see Resources). BlackBerry Desktop Manager is from RIM, the makers of BlackBerry, and allows your to use your BlackBerry as a wireless modem as well as manage other aspects of your phone from your computer. Step 2 Connect your BlackBerry to your computer using a USB cable. Step 3 Run BlackBerry Desktop Manager onyour laptop, and select the "IP Modem" option. Step 4 Click the "Configure" button under the Connection Settings heading. Step 5 Select the "Sprint" option in the drop-down menu under the Connection Profile heading. If you got your BlackBerry through your company, your firm's IT department may be able to provide this information as well. Select the check box at the bottom of the window if you want to keep the Internet connection open if you close BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Click "OK" when you're done.
