How to Connect a BlackBerry As a Modem With a Laptop to Browse the Internet

Click the Start button, then"Control Panel" and then "Phone and Modem Options." You may be prompted to supply location information; you only need to type in your BlackBerry's area code. Select the "Modems" tab and see if there is a "Standard Modem" option. If so, skip to the next section. Otherwise continue. Select "Add," then check the box next to "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list," and then click "Next." Click "(Standard Modem Types)," then "Standard P56000 bps Modem," and click "Next." Select "COM1" in the option window you see and then click"Next." Wait a moment for Windows to set up the modem and then click"Finish" when it displays. Now you should see the "Standard Modem" option in the "Modems" tab. GSM Setup Step 1 Find out if your carrier uses GSM, CDMA or UMTS for its network. You'll need to check your carrier's website or the documentation you received when you set up your account. T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM; other providers vary, though UMTS is less common than CDMA. Ifyour phone anything but GSM, continue on to the next section; you only need to take these steps for a GSM network. Step 2 Access the "Control Panel" on your computer by clicking the Start button then "Control Panel." Step 3 Double-click "Phone and Modem Options," select the "Modems" tab and then select the"Standard Modem" option you set up earlier. Click on the "Properties" button andthen the "Advanced" tab. Step 4 Type this into the text box labeled"Extra initialization commands" if you are not a T-Mobile customer:"+cgdcont=1,"IP"," "." Note that the very first and very last quotation marks should not be typed, but all others should; the text box on your screen should contain a total of four quotation marks. The " " is the access point name supplied by yourcarrier; contact your carrier's support department if you don't know what it is. If you are a T-Mobile customer, type this in (minus first and last quotes):"+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"." Step 5 Click "OK" in the properties window and then click "OK" in the "Phone and Modem Options" window. Configure Your Dial-Up Network for Windows Vista or 7 Step 1 Click the Start button and select"Connect To." Step 2 Select "Set up a connection or network" and then select "Set up a dialup connection." Step 3 Type in the appropriate information in the phone number field. For if your phone on a GSM or an EDGE network, type "*99#"; if your phone is on a CDMA network, then type "#777"; if your phone is on a UMTS network, type "*98#". Click the "Next" button. Step 4 Type the username and password your carrier requires, if applicable. Ifyour carrier doesn't require this, leave the fields blank. Step 5 Type "BlackBerry" in the"Connection Name" field. Step 6 Select the "Connect" button. Configure Your Dial-Up Network for Windows XP Step 1 Click the Start button, select"Control Panel," then "Network Connections." Step 2 Select "Create a New Connection." This opens a new window. Click"Next." Step 3 Make the following selections in response to the on-screen prompts:"Connect to the Internet," "Next,""Connect using a dial-up modem" and "Next." You should not be at a window labeled "Select a Device." Step 4 Select the "Standard Modem" option you created earlier. Step 5 Type "BlackBerry" or any other name you prefer in the "ISP Name"; it does not matter what you type. Step 6 Type in the appropriate information in the phone number field. For if your phone on a GSM or an EDGE network, type "*99#"; if your phone is on a CDMA network, then type "#777"; if your phone is on a UMTS network, type "*98#". Click the "Next" button. Step 7 Select which users on your computer will have access to the network connection and click"Next." Step 8 Type the username and password your carrier requires, if applicable. Ifyour carrier doesn't require this, leave the text boxes blank. Step 9 Click "Finish." Make the Connection Step 1 Connect your BlackBerry to your computer with a USB cable or via Bluetooth. Step 2 Run the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and make sure its status is"Connected." Step 3 Click the Start button, then"Connect To," then select the connection you created earlier; this is for Windows Vista or 7. For Windows XP, click the Start button, then "Control Panel," then"Network Connections" and then the network you created. Step 4 Type in the required username and password, if applicable. Step 5 Click "Dial" to begin dialing up and connecting to the Internet with your BlackBerry. Tips After you've set everything up the first time, all you have to do is take the steps in the "Make the Connection" section to get online; you don't need to work through all the other settings again. Warnings When your laptop is online using your BlackBerry, you shouldn't use your BlackBerry to access websitesor perform other data functions; this could interrupt your laptop's Internet connection
